The vaccine initiative encompasses investments in discovery research, early clinical and translational research, and more advanced clinical development, all with an emphasis on developing vaccine products. Within this initiative, a deputy director and team of program officers, together with a program coordinator and other business team members, manage a comprehensive portfolio of grants, contracts, and program-related investments in support of HIV vaccine discovery and development. The HIV vaccine initiative also engages deeply with the Discovery & Translational Science, Integrated Development, and Vaccine Development functional teams. The HIV Vaccines initiative is implemented in significant part through the foundation-funded Collaboration for AIDS Vaccine Discovery (www.cavd.org). <br/><br/>The HIV vaccine initiative is seeking an SPO - Concept Pipeline to inform upstream vaccine discovery and development strategies. They will strategically develop and manage a portfolio of complex grants requiring high-level grant management skills, monitoring, and evaluation. The SPO will utilize their scientific and subject-matter expertise, and leverage capability from individuals and teams across the foundation, to support the development and management of a portfolio of grants focused on the concept pipeline/discovery of HIV vaccine products. Applicants should be scientists and/or physician scientists with an established track record of success. Our goal is to reduce the burden of these diseases through targeted and effective control, elimination and eradication efforts. Our strategy reflects where we believe the foundation is best positioned-among a broad spectrum of actors-to help significantly reduce the incidence of neglected infectious diseases and ultimately, eradicate malaria.<br/><br/>To this end, we support efforts to accelerate progress through coordinated vaccines, mass drug administration against multiple diseases, public-health surveillance, and vector control. Additionally, we have focused our priorities on multiple vector borne infectious diseases including Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL or Kala Azar), Dengue and Malaria.<br/>- <b>VL</b> is a major public health problem in the Indian subcontinent that affects 300,000 people per year. Bihar shares 85% of India's VL Burden and the disease is endemic in 33 out of 38 districts of the state.<br/><br/>Over the last year, the government of Bihar (GoB) has increased its focus on VL with the objective of elimination. The goal of the VL elimination program is to reduce the annual incidence to less than one per 10,000 at the district or sub district level by 2020.<br/>- <b>Dengue</b> is a mosquito-borne viral illness and its incidence has increased 30-fold worldwide since the 1960s. An estimated 50 million people are infected each year. There is no effective treatment, and current methods of controlling transmission are costly and often ineffective because they are used too late.<br/><br/>Dengue is a high-opportunity target because several potential vaccines are in development. We are supporting preparations to deploy a safe and affordable vaccine when it becomes available. Meanwhile, we are investing in the development of novel mosquito-control methods to prevent outbreaks. We are also funding work on new ways to detect or even predict dengue outbreaks early enough for transmission controls to succeed.<br/>- Our <b>Malaria</b> program strategy is based on our assumption that the preventive and curative tools that are currently available are not sufficient to achieve eradication everywhere, especially in areas of high transmission, and that emerging resistance to drugs and insecticides present additional challenges. With eradication as the aim, our strategy focuses both on improving current approaches and on intensive research and development toward the creation of new vaccines, vector-control tools, drugs, and diagnostics to prevent and interrupt transmission of the two major species infecting humans, P. falciparum and P. vivax.<br/><br/>We also engage in modeling to better understand the potential impact of new tools and the optimal combination of such tools to achieve eradication in different settings. These strategy teams are supported by functional teams that focus on Discovery and Translational Sciences, Vaccine Development, Integrated Development, and Life Sciences Partnerships.<br/><br/><br/></td></tr><tr height=25><td valign=top><b>Responsibilities</b></td><td>The Portfolio & Platform Lead will work with Global Health Program Strategy Teams (PSTs) and Functional Teams to ensure that the portfolio of investments related to product development have robust implementation plans that ultimately result in interventions. Leverage expertise in developing drugs, vaccines, devices and/or diagnostics as well as apply rigorous methodology to assist the PSTs and functional teams in assessing, managing and continuously refining the portfolios to achieve optimal global health impact through our partners and grantees. Reporting to the Global Health Chief of Staff (COS), the Senior Project Officer is also responsible for coordinating the GH President's relationship with the Heads of Research Organizations (e.g., NIAID, NIH, Wellcome Trust) and coordinating the GH President's engagement with the various Health/Science Ministries, especially the ones with existing MoUs. The Senior Project Officer is an integral member of the Office of the President staff. <br/><br/>In coordination with the COS and APO, Trips/Events, the role is also responsible for shaping the learning agenda of the GH President and for orchestrating topical learning sessions throughout the year  across a wide area of life science, research and development and global health areas. In partnership with software, technology, governmental, nonprofit, academic, and private partner collaborators, the Crosscutting Biosurveillance Initiative is identifying and linking a set of tools and technologies capable of integrating traditional epidemiologic, molecular/genomic, social media, and other contextual Big Data sets. Once developed, the toolkit will be openly available to external partners. The initiative will address end-to-end data access, management, integration, alignment, analysis, model creation, data visualization, and decision support. Data will be openly contributed by existing surveillance networks, systems, and partners. User interface solutions will ensure that the integrated data is accessible to and useful for partners.<br/><br/>Roles and Responsibilities<br/><br/>The Program Officer, Analytic Epidemiology will be responsible for one main area of work:<br/>- Integrate newly developed tools and test them in the development of additional core epidemiological models that will forecast the spatiotemporal dynamics of malaria and polio probabilistically. This will require performing initial literature searches, as well as, work with multiple knowledgebase sources to be up to speed with state of the art approaches. This individual will gather and integrate a variety of models in order to produce a unique platform. He/she will then proceed to develop a set of models and test them against historical datasets.<br/><br/>The program officer will work closely with the malaria and polio program strategy teams and cross-cutting functional teams to ensure that the platform being developed meets their needs.<br/><br/>The program officer will report directly to the Director of Vaccine Development, with technical supervision from a Senior Program Officer in Epidemiology and Surveillance. The position will be a two year professional engagement based in Seattle.
