With our partners across the country, we have demonstrated that with the right opportunities, the most disadvantaged young people can achieve at high levels. Yet today, only 71 percent of students earn a high school diploma, fewer than six in 10 minority students' graduate with their peers, and many graduates are unprepared for college. A core lesson from our work is that we need to dramatically accelerate academic performance to achieve results. We have set an ambitious goal for our work and investments: to help ensure that 80 percent of high school students graduate fully prepared for college, with a focus on low-income and minority young people reaching this target.<br/><br/>There are three main strategy elements:<br/>- Empowering Effective Teaching<br/>- Next Generation Models<br/>- College Ready Work <br/><br/><br/></td></tr><tr height=25><td valign=top><b>Responsibilities</b></td><td>The College Ready Work Team is focused on improving the work that teachers and students do together. Our investments seek to help teachers teach to college ready standards and to provide new ways for them to get the support they need, including via digital technologies (i.e. use of video, e mentoring/coaching and by linking evaluation systems to more effective supports.) In addition, we have portfolio of investments focused on what students need to be CR and new ways for them to demonstrate college readiness. On the student supports side we are investing in games as learning and assessment; proficiency pathways; and academic tenacity/engagement research and practical applications.<br/><br/>This job description is for the teacher supports program officer. The teacher supports position will manage a portfolio of investments related to our teacher engagement and networks strategy.<br/><br/>Three years ago we made a set of investments in tools to help teachers implement the Common Core. We invested in a set of states, districts and networks. We found the most powerful voices for the work were teachers and began to see a viral spread of the work via teacher networks (formal and informal ones). This position will hope grow these networks from a couple hundred thousand teachers to over a million. We have also launched a broader teacher engagement strategy and this position will manage grants related to that work as well. <br/><br/>The ideal candidate has:<br/>- Managed complex systems/programs<br/>- Understands curriculum and instructional issues (and the shifts required by the Common Core)<br/>- Familiar with the strategies that use social media to scale ideas/tools<br/>- Familiar with existing teacher networks and interested in building new ones<br/>- Familiar with the latest teacher accountability systems and research on teacher effectiveness<br/>- Has been a teacher or worked closely with teachers and understands their realities<br/>- Specific duties include: Managing a set of teacher network grantees and significantly growing that network over the next three years. Our strategies focus on Agriculture Development; Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene; Financial Services for the Poor; and Family Health which includes Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, Family Planning, and Nutrition. These strategies are supported by functional teams that focus on Vaccine Delivery and Integrated Delivery. GDP also has Special Initiatives that focus Urban Poverty, Emergency Relief, and Value for the Money.<br/><br/></td></tr><tr height=25><td valign=top><b>Responsibilities</b></td><td>Within the GDP, the Family Health Division encompasses the two Program Strategy Teams (PSTs) of MNCH and Nutrition. In addition, FH has a very strong affinity, when it comes to delivering interventions through the primary care system, with Family Planning, and to some extent with Routine Immunization programs. The volume, scope, and integrated content of Measurement, Learning, and Evaluation (MLE) work associated with these topics require cross-team collaboration, and a systemic view of the context we work in.<br/><br/>The SPO, Family Health MLE will shape and manage (or co-manage) the key MLE investments in support of the Family Health strategy teams; use results measurement and evaluation to improve implementation and course-correction; support annual strategy reviews and periodic strategy calibration exercises; ensure strong evaluation and study design suitable to a variety of research and programmatic questions and priorities; and provide analysis and interpretation, especially as it relates to Family Health investments in its target geographies of India, Nigeria and Ethiopia. This position reports to the Deputy Director, Policy Development, U.S. Policy and Advocacy and works closely with a range of team members across both the foundation's Policy and Advocacy (USPA) and College Ready programs.<br/><br/>His/her responsibilities will include the following:<br/><br/>Develop, Manage, and Support a Grant Portfolio.<br/>- Review, refine, and align an existing portfolio of relationships, grants and approaches to optimize resources and results.<br/>- Prospect for potential new grant opportunities, analyzing their feasibility, shaping specific opportunities, presenting recommendations internally, and negotiating grant agreements.<br/>- Develop actionable milestones and metrics for individual grants and for portfolio in line with dashboards established by the USPA and College Ready teams and considering the role of research and evaluation in the development of investments.<br/>- Independently, and in consultation with colleagues, work collaboratively to develop and execute grant portfolio.<br/>- Provide strategic thought partnership and support to grantees and non-grantee partners.<br/><br/>Advise and Support US Leadership in key topics.<br/><br/>Provide intellectual leadership and guidance to continually refine and develop our theory of action and the strategy behind our policy and advocacy work. Write informational briefings and other materials on key issues for the UPSA leadership team and foundation leadership, in consultation with USPA and College Ready Deputy Directors as appropriate.<br/><br/>Represent the Foundation to the public.<br/><br/>Bring together disparate and influential individuals and groups; mobilize them to take action on complex and highly visible problems; navigate and negotiate in highly charged situations.<br/><br/><br/></td></tr><tr height=25><td valign=top><b>Qualifications</b></td><td>The successful candidate will bring not only deep knowledge of issues and policies around effective teaching, but also demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the multiple perspectives around these issues. She/he brings at least ten years prior experience from both the policy and advocacy worlds, along with respect for and expertise around issues of implementation and practice. Reporting to the President of the US Program, the successful individual will lead the group to provide policy and advocacy thought partnership and support to the College Ready and Post-Secondary programs.
