The role provides direct administrative and organizational support to members of the advocacy and communications staff, and works as part of a small team of other assistants to support the overall work and ensure the smooth running of the European Office. The team includes three Country Representatives, based in Ethiopia, South Africa and Nigeria. It also includes three Program Officers based in Seattle, covering other high priority countries in Africa.<br/><br/>The Senior Program Officer will be one of the senior positions within the Africa team. Based in Seattle, it will lead on a number of high priority countries in Africa, not including our three Country Representative countries: Ethiopia, South Africa and Nigeria. While the allocation of country lead responsibilities is subject to review and the best use of the overall talents within the team, the initial intention is to focus this position on East or Southern Africa, possibly including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Malawi. The SPO will also take a lead responsibility within the Africa team for one of our 4 main program advocacy areas: Agriculture, Family Health, HIV/TB/Malaria & Vaccines and Polio. Initially it is likely to be Agriculture or Family Health but that is flexible.<br/><br/>The Senior Program Officer's main role will be to lead the Foundation's overall Policy & Advocacy work in 4-6 high priority countries. In the 2-3 highest priority countries, this will include developing a Foundation country plan with a virtual team of Program Officers with significant active grants in those countries. This will involve working with Program, Policy & Advocacy and Communications staff to identify the key opportunities for the Foundation in these countries. Additionally, we have focused our priorities on multiple vector borne infectious diseases including Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL or Kala Azar), Dengue and Malaria.<br/>- <b>VL</b> is a major public health problem in the Indian subcontinent that affects 300,000 people per year. Bihar shares 85% of India's VL Burden and the disease is endemic in 33 out of 38 districts of the state.<br/><br/>Over the last year, the government of Bihar (GoB) has increased its focus on VL with the objective of elimination. The goal of the VL elimination program is to reduce the annual incidence to less than one per 10,000 at the district or sub district level by 2020.<br/>- <b>Dengue</b> is a mosquito-borne viral illness and its incidence has increased 30-fold worldwide since the 1960s. An estimated 50 million people are infected each year. There is no effective treatment, and current methods of controlling transmission are costly and often ineffective because they are used too late.<br/><br/>Dengue is a high-opportunity target because several potential vaccines are in development. We are supporting preparations to deploy a safe and affordable vaccine when it becomes available. Meanwhile, we are investing in the development of novel mosquito-control methods to prevent outbreaks. We are also funding work on new ways to detect or even predict dengue outbreaks early enough for transmission controls to succeed.<br/>- Our <b>Malaria</b> program strategy is based on our assumption that the preventive and curative tools that are currently available are not sufficient to achieve eradication everywhere, especially in areas of high transmission, and that emerging resistance to drugs and insecticides present additional challenges. Gates Sr., under the direction of Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett.<br/><br/></td></tr><tr height=25><td valign=top><b>Group Summary</b></td><td>Communications staff contribute to advocacy efforts, raise awareness of the issues the foundation addresses, work to protect and advance the foundation's reputation, and oversee all internal and external communications functions.<br/><br/></td></tr><tr height=25><td valign=top><b>Responsibilities</b></td><td>Strategic Planning-Creative, which is comparable to an ad agency Account Planner/Strategic Planner role, plays a key part in developing communications strategies, messaging platforms and authoring creative briefs that inform the creative product.<br/><br/>Critical to this role is the experience and ability to assume the role of our disparate audiences which cross all social economic classes and global regions, and include government decision makers, social influencers, engaged public and employees.<br/><br/>Planners combine segment and audience data and insights, qualitative research and program knowledge within a core proposition or messaging platform to enable the communications group to produce engaging and compelling messaging that amplifies and enhances the work of the foundation, it's partners and it's grantees.
